Bulletproof URL regular expression

There is much to think of a proper regex for the URL. Anders Ekdahl and I have together created a bulletproof regexp for the URL that begins with http://, https:// and www. It's perfect if you want to have BBCode like replacement on your blog and it's quite simple to understand for editing.

Expression

(http(s?):\/\/|(www.))([a-z0-9\/_;:%#=&?@\-.]+[a-z0-9\/_#=&?\-])

E.g. in PHP with preg_replace:
